We are working on configuring the iPads around the ring (and the ones that will be on stands in REF and CIRC) to have some restrictions on use and to develop policies for use. When we get them set up we will either set up a meeting for training or work with each of you individually to show you some of the basics. Some of you are probably more familiar with iPads than I am so your input is also very welcome. I wanted to let you know of a few things we have set up so far. We have put a parental restriction password on each iPad and restricted the following activities:
Facetime – set to off
Installing Apps – set to off
Deleting Apps – set to off
Accounts (mail) – set to don’t allow changes - this prohibits students from setting up mail accounts on our iPads.
In-App Purchases – set to off (Many free apps allow in-app purchases, which is how they make their money.)
Multiplayer Games – set to off
Adding Friends – set to off
Additionally, you cannot set a homepage on Safari on an iPad but you can (and we have) created a bookmark for the AAU library and set the bookmark bar to always display. Here are directions on how to set this up if a student or someone else changes this setting:
Go to Settings > Safari > Change Always Show Bookmarks Bar to ON.
Go to the AAU library website. Click the arrow coming out of the rectangle box next to the URL bar. Click Add Bookmark. Now Select Bookmarks Bar. Select Bookmarks Bar again. The name of the website will now be shown on the bookmarks bar. Once Safari is open you can simply tap the bookmark to go directly to the AAU website.
