Dec. 19 - Last day of the semester!

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Hi David, Sloan, and Chris,

Thanks for holding down the fort on the last day of the semester! In all likelihood, it will be a slow day, but there might be a lot of returns, so you should probably check the bookdrop at least twice. I’m going to have you guys put up some signs during the day, and I’ve left these behind the circ desk with notes as to which ones go where. Additionally, I’d like you and the student workers to focus on shelving and shelf-reading. I’m putting out a shelf reading log; once an area has been read, the person who did it can write down the call number range and put their initials next to it so that I’ll know what’s been done next week. Finally, remember that anything checked out tomorrow is also due tomorrow!

See you guys next semester. Thanks for everything!

Printer-less

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Word is, our printer has a broken part. A part that we can’t get until Monday. So, we are printer-less for the remainder of the semester! Hopefully it will not be too busy Friday and Saturday (apparently most classes ended today). Remember that the Mac Lab is available to all students from 7:30-10:30 every morning, and we have that handy sheet of nearby copy/print centers to hand out to students.

The printer is giving errors constantly, requiring reboots.  We have put in service requests with Ikon. 10:00 AM -Ian

Time to start thinking schedules!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Okay, maybe it’s a little early to start thinking about your spring schedule, given the fact that there are nearly six weeks between the end of this semester and the beginning of spring semester. But the time will go quickly! I would like your “ideal” work schedule by Wednesday, January 6 at the latest. I’ll e-mail you guys at your home e-mail addresses during the last week of December to remind you! Remember, you can always contact me here: My phone number is 415-618-3916 and my e-mail address is hstenson@academyart.edu.

ALSO! We will be having a circ worker meeting sometime during the last week of January, before the spring semester starts. We’ll be announcing the date and time within the next few weeks. You guys have been troopers this semester - thanks for all your hard work. Have a great break!

Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Hi everyone,

Several of you requested the recipe for the Mac and Cheese I brought to the party last weekend so I made copies of the article and recipe and put them right next to the calendar at the circulation desk. I highlighted the Classic Mac and Cheese recipe as this is the one I make. There is an additional recipe for Shells with Gorgonzola on the last page that I have never made but is probably tasty! This article was in the November 1997 issue of Fine Cooking.

Happy cooking!

New hours beginning Spring Semester

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Starting in Spring 2010, the library will open at 10 AM instead of 8 AM on weekdays. (Weekday closing times and weekend hours will remain the same.) We are putting up signs and will post an announcement on our website in order to give people as much advance notice as possible, since this will come as a shock to some. People will be coming to us with questions, and I’d like us to put a very positive spin on this. This isn’t us cutting hours (even though we are), this is us providing better service during the busiest times of the day! Below are a few talking points, and remember: Be positive. If someone is really upset or needs more information than you can give them, have them talk with a member of the management team.

Typically we are very slow between the hours of 8 and 10, and the majority of students who are using the library during this time are here to use the computers and print. These two services are offered by the Mac Lab on the 4th floor to all students from 7:30 to 10:30 every day. Since this is available for students, the school administration advised Debra to change our open hours to reflect our usage patterns, meaning we will be able to provide better coverage and better service during the times when we are busiest. Remember, our online resources are available all the time!

Teachers and staff members may have more specific questions about how this will affect their activities, including copying, printing, and checking items out prior to classes. While we’re not sure about some of the specific details yet, we will probably be able to accommodate faculty member’s last-minute needs on a case-by-case basis, but we will be advising them to, for instance, come in the night before their class instead of in the morning before their class.

Questions? Ask away!

Student Model Behind Circdesk

Monday, December 7th, 2009

There’s a model of a building (a dog boutique) being kept behind the circ desk for some students.  They asked to leave it here overnight and pick it up Tuesday (8th) morning at about 9 PM.  I left a note on it with their names and put it in the footspace for the PC in the back of the circ desk area.

Instructor Angela Holm will be coming in on Monday at 7pm to check out the DVD Weekend on course reserve - she is going to take it to her class for an hour or so. Please let her take it out of the library, but let her know it has to be back by closing.

Fashion Display at 79 New Montgomery Gallery

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Hello all,

The Fashion Department is doing a big display at 79 New Montgomery for the Winter Holiday! And they are going to use some library resources in the display. They needed a bunch of magazines to display on two bookshelves so I let them borrow the back issues of Vanity Fair. They are unbound and fashion related and we have quite a run of them so they seemed like a good choice. If students happen to request the old copies of Vanity Fair please let them know that they are temporarily unavailable but will be back on the shelves for Spring 2010 semester. And, go check out the fashion display!
