Andrew Loomis Collection CD

Hello,

We have a rather odd item in our collection which is a CD with 4 Illustration books by Andrew Loomis. The Illustration Department made this disk several years ago and we house it. The titles that are contained on the CD are: Creative Illustration, Figure Drawing for all it’s worth, Drawing the Head and Hands, and Successful Drawing. If a student comes in and requests this item it is for Library use only and is housed in the Online Course CD drawers under Illustration. It is and should remain the first CD under the Illustration section of the Online course CDs.

Copy Card dispenser in the Mac lab is working

The copy card dispenser in the mac lab is now working and the credit card functionality on that machine as well as the machine in the library appears to be working as well. Please let me know if you hear otherwise.

Photography Students and Scanning

Hello,

I had two Photography students ask me for permission to take library materials out of the library to the 8th floor Photography labs yesterday stating that the scanners up there are better quality. I spoke with Kirk Amyx, Associate Director/Digital Photography, this morning and the fact of the matter is that our scanners (the large format Epson scanners) are of equal quality to the scanners in their labs. So I will not be making exceptions for students to scan library materials on the 8th floor. Simply let them know that the scanners here are of equal quality and that if they have questions they can speak to me or Kirk Amyx in Photo.

No More Scissors at the Front Desk!

I have decided to make an executive decision and discontinue offering scissors at the front desk. As most of you know we have only let students use them at the desk for the last few years in an attempt to reduce vandalism to our materials; but this policy is simply too cumbersome and students don’t like it anyway.

 

So, from now on simply tell students we don’t loan scissors and they are free to use the paper cutters or purchase an X-ACTO knife or pair of scissors themselves if they need them.

Holds placed for Debra

I have placed a few holds on books that should be on course reserve but are in circulation. I changed the priority of some of the holds so that I am the first person in the queue for the item. If you check in an item that is on hold for me it is because the item needs to be on Course Reserve. Bring it to me, Audrey Ferrie, or Rosita Burke for processing please.

Staff Picks Queue

Hi all,

If you are shelving any books that are Staff Picks (with the Reading List sticker), please do not add them to the display tower if you do not see a vacant wire unit to prop it up.

What should you do instead?

Drop them off in the spot reserved behind the Circulation Desk for these extra books!

Head toward the shelves with the feature films facing the back of the Library; the Staff Picks queue is the bottom shelf on the right under the Gnomon videos.

Printing: the Agony and the Ecstasy

Being that we have a lot of students in the library using our printing system, we are also seeing an uptick in printing issues! Here is a quick list of issues you might encounter and solutions:

A)color printer isn’t printing jobs students send it.

-First check to make sure the student hasn’t accidentally sen the job to the B&W printer, or they didn’t click the “release print job” button.  If there is just one student complaining of this issue, this is often the problem. The majority of the time printing issues can be resolved by trouble shooting so called “operator errors”.
-Make sure the student didn’t sent a 11 by 17 job.  You can tell this is the case if the “Fiery driven” button on the color copier is lit up with a red light.  Push this button and follow the screen prompts to print the job on 8 1/2 by 11 paper.  We don’t usually give refunds for this mistake to students.

- HOWEVER, if this doesn’t solve the problem, you’ll need to restarted the servers.  The wiki gives the best instructions:

Please read this over and be familiar with it, but know there is printed instructions in the purple folder at the circ desk.  Also, please keep in mind that when the server is restarted, the PrintITC software must be restarted on all of the student computers! Ask for help if and when this happens.

Update to the Copy Card Issue

Hello,

Ok, I think we have figured out what the problem is with the copy cards. It is not that they aren’t “loaded.” It is that they are only read correctly if they are inserted the correct way. And what is the correct way, you ask? Well, that is not obvious as there are no arrows on these cards like our old logo cards! So from what I can tell the correct way is inserting the card with the little gold rectangle facing the card reader. Or if all else fails, insert the card, if it doesn’t work, reinsert it the other way. Genuis I know….

No Value Copy Cards

Unfortunately, some of our newly “preloaded” copy cards appear to not actually be “loaded.” They are showing up as $0 value on the card reader.We did a small test and we are hoping the few cards that have shown up today are an anomaly; however we need Circulation Assistants to keep us in the loop if this continues to happen.

If a student comes up to the desk saying they purchased a card from the machine but it isn’t working insert it into the card reader below the circ desk to check the balance. If it is $0 it is one of the bad cards and you should go ahead and put $1 on it for the student.

Please keep Audrey and I informed about the number of cards you encounter that have no value. We will follow up with our vendor about the issue.

Two things to be aware of this week:

-the statistics sheet to opening and closing gate count is back! Yay! You can find it on the G drive in the folder “statistics sheets” then the folder “statistics 2011.” Debra has created shortcut that you can drag onto your desktop as well.  Please use this statistics sheet to keep track of our gate count from now on!

-Please make sure to log off of Millennium when you leave in the evening, especially on the Circ/Ref computer!
