Picture File Envelopes: New Location

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Since the picture files are in Room 602 now, the picture file envelopes are there now too. Lillian’s computer is equipped with a scanner and does have Millennium on it, so you can use it to check picture files out to patrons if Lillian isn’t there. The envelopes are located in the top drawer of the short filing cabinet right next to Lillian’s desk.

Pages conversion solution

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Hey everyone.  I know that lots of our students use Pages, and then are frustrated when they can’t print out their documents at the library.  There is a simple workaround that I have been using for awhile.  Zamzar is a free/legit online conversion tool!  It can convert all text documents to pdf, doc, docx, txt.  The site then emails the user an email with a link to the converted files.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Circ ring iPad passcode

Friday, September 14th, 2012

In the interests of keeping students from setting their own passcodes on the circ ring iPads, we have preemptively set one! This passcode will need to be entered after 4 hours of inactivity. Hopefully students will be using them enough during the day that this won’t come up, but it will definitely need to be entered by circ workers first thing in the morning.

The passcode is: 1!circLib4 (case sensitive)

We are looking at other options to keep students from being able to change these sorts of settings, but in the meantime the only way to keep students from being able to set a passcode is to have one of our own already set. I will put this information on the wiki as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

“DVD Room” calendar renamed to “Theater Room” calendar

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Hi all,

I asked Heather to change the name of the DVD Room calendar to Theater Room calendar as Theater Room is what that room is actually called. Because the links on the Intranet under “Library Staff Tools” are in alphabetical order the link to that calendar moved down several places to the “T” section. It is the same calendar and intended to be used to reserve the Theater Room. Any questions please ask.

Nanook of the North

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Right now, a lot of students need to watch Nanook of the North. We have one copy on course reserve, which is in very high demand! If a student can’t wait for our copy to become available, you can also point them to the Internet Archive, which has a full copy available as a streaming video. (Thank you to Daniel for finding this and letting everyone know!) The link is: http://archive.org/details/PhantasmagoriaTheater-NanookOfTheNorth1922752.

UPDATE: I have added this announcement to the Library Blog (linked from the home page of our website), so that you can tell students to go to the post titled “Nanook of the North - Online!” for the link.

Library iPads

Friday, September 7th, 2012

Hello,

We are working on configuring the iPads around the ring (and the ones that will be on stands in REF and CIRC) to have some restrictions on use and to develop policies for use. When we get them set up we will either set up a meeting for training or work with each of you individually to show you some of the basics. Some of you are probably more familiar with iPads than I am so your input is also very welcome. I wanted to let you know of a few things we have set up so far. We have put a parental restriction password on each iPad and restricted the following activities:

Facetime – set to off

Installing Apps – set to off

Deleting Apps – set to off

Accounts (mail) – set to don’t allow changes - this prohibits students from setting up mail accounts on our iPads.

In-App Purchases – set to off (Many free apps allow in-app purchases, which is how they make their money.)

Multiplayer Games – set to off

Adding Friends – set to off

Additionally, you cannot set a homepage on Safari on an iPad but you can (and we have) created a bookmark for the AAU library and set the bookmark bar to always display. Here are directions on how to set this up if a student or someone else changes this setting:

Go to Settings > Safari > Change Always Show Bookmarks Bar to ON.

Go to the AAU library website. Click the arrow coming out of the rectangle box next to the URL bar. Click Add Bookmark. Now Select Bookmarks Bar. Select Bookmarks Bar again. The name of the website will now be shown on the bookmarks bar. Once Safari is open you can simply tap the bookmark to go directly to the AAU website.

That is all for now!

Computer in 664

Friday, September 7th, 2012

Hi Circ Staff,

Just wanted to post a note to say that there is a now a PC in 664 that you can use on your breaks and on your job hours. Heather installed Millennium on it this morning so you should be all set to go.

Best,

Debra
