iPad theft in the library

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

Hello all,

As many of you know we realized yesterday afternoon that the iPad on the right hand side of the ring while facing the circulation desk has been stolen. The entire case, iPad, and security cable is missing. I have alerted Campus Security to this but needless to say it is disturbing and disappointing. We really need to be vigilant about observing our patrons and what they are up to and we need to be vigilant about searching peoples’ bags. There was a security strip on the iPad that should have set off the gate. The iPads are obviously very tempting so please make sure to be monitoring them closely on your shifts.

Debra

UPDATE: The iPad case by the MFA desk has been damaged in a theft attempt and is no longer secure. I have taken the iPad out of it for safe keeping and have moved the stand; however, we have a THIEF in the library! Please be extra vigilant about watching people and call security if anything seems suspicious! Better safe than sorry. Also, if you notice something is missing alert management immediately, do not assume someone on staff has moved it.

Thanks!

Reference Text Students Have Been Coming in for

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

Hey folks.

Students have been inquiring about a required text they are calling Professional Trade Directory, but what they are looking for is the 2011 edition of National Trade and Professional Associations of the United States. It is in Reference, but since it has been so heavily requested, we are treating it as a course reserve by keeping it behind the desk, taking the student’s ID and doing a soft check out for one hour.

AAU Student Mental Health Emergency Guide

Friday, February 15th, 2013

Hello all,

I had an older handout of the AAU Student Mental Health Emergency Guide in my office and I contacted Sue Rowley and Mike Petricca to ensure that it was still accurate. After making a few small changes it is now posted behind the Book Drop sign at the front desk and every full time staff member has a copy of it in their office.

The essential information is that if a student is exhibiting aggressive behavior, unusual behavior, or has threatened to hurt him/herself or others we have two options: to call campus security or to call 911. It is up to the staff member who is witnessing the behavior to decide whether or not the situation can be handled by campus security or whether to call 911.

That being said, if you are on the circulation desk or in the library and are witnessing concerning behavior and there is a manager on duty call one of us immediately, unless it is a life threatening situation, in which case always call 911 first. Then alert a manager if we aren’t already aware of the situation.

This issue will be addressed in the next Circulation Staff meeting which will be held as soon as we get the new circulation assistants hired.

Missing Course Reserves Titles

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Hello circ staff,

Perhaps some have encountered this scenario:  a student comes to the circ desk searching for a book that her teacher said would be here… only the book isn’t in course reserve or, worse yet, not even in the catalog!
Of course, you’ll want to make sure that we don’t, in fact, have the title. Students’ recollection of the text name isn’t always exact, so asking to see a copy of the syllabus listing of required texts is a good idea.

Please see my comment regarding this issue. It does not need to go back to the instructor. Pass these requests on to Rose.

Thanks,

Debra

“Missing” Status

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Heather here with a reminder/deeply heartfelt plea to leave an x-note in an item’s record when you’re marking it missing in Millennium! If you don’t leave an x-note that includes the date, it’s very difficult to exactly pinpoint when the item was marked missing, leading to all sorts of wild conjectures in the Technical Services office.

So, an item is missing from the shelf. You change the status to “m” (missing). Good, good. Now add an x-note, like so: “Item marked missing on 2/12/13 by HS.” Or something to that effect - the really important part is the date.

Thank you!

Aggressive student behavior

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Circ staff should be aware that Daniel and I witnessed a student acting very aggressively, cursing and shoving library equipment. He also shouted at us from the elevator lobby. Remarks he made indicated that he is a new student. At the time, he was wearing a grey hoodie and grey backpack. A physical description:
- Tall

-White

-Thin

-Short (about 1″ in length) dark brown hair

-Appeared to be in his early-to-mid-twenties

Does anyone have an update on what is being done at the AAU administrative level to address aggressive/violent behavior? We still have not had any training on this critical issue.

-Annie

Update: Hopefully, this particular student won’t pose another problem, but if he - or any other student, for that matter - does, here’s an outline for course of action provided by Audrey:

-Call security and provide them with a description of the incident and the student
-Call Audrey at her office or cell (510-379-0312); call Debra
