The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor) offer a free image resource called the ImageBase, which contains over 82,000 images from their collections. The ImageBase uses Zoomify to allow users to zoom into high-resolution images.

Images from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are also searchable in the Academy of Art University’s LUNA collection. The de Young and Legion of Honor Museums have contributed almost 18,000 high-resolution images to the Amica Library. To access images just from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in LUNA:

  1. Select the LUNA Digital Image Collections from the Digital Images Webpage
  2. Select the Amica Library (from the collections list on the left of the LUNA database)
  3. Select advanced search (found at the top-right of the LUNA database)
  4. Select “AMICA Contributor” from the dropdown menu of the “find this exact wording” field and begin typing in “Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco”
  5. Select search
  6. This search should retrieve 17,687 images from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco collections

For additional assistance with finding specific images and instruction on how to use LUNA, contact Heather Cummins, Visual Resources Librarian, at the Academy of Art University library.

Historical Anatomies on the Web

October 14th, 2009 by Heather Cummins

The Historical Anatomies on the Web (HAW) image database is a wonderful resource for students seeking anatomical, skeletal, and muscular examples of the human body. The US National Library of Medicine publishes HAW. Images are scanned from important anatomical atlases in the library’s collection. To begin searching the image database, select the “Browse Titles” link on the database’s homepage and click on one of the thumbnails listed on the left of each atlas’ title. To view one of the thumbnails as a high-resolution image, click on the “Large JPEG” link below the thumbnail.

Students seeking more anatomy resources can also search the Academy of Art University library’s “Fine Art – Anatomy” subject guide.

Irving Penn 1917-2009

October 8th, 2009 by Heather Cummins

Irving Penn, one of the greatest 20th century photographers, died on October 7, at the age of 92. Penn worked for Alexey Brodovitch, long-time art director for Harper’s Bazaar magazine, in the late 1930’s and began photographing fashion subjects for Vogue in the 1940’s. These photographs were “noted for their formal qualities” and were “enhanced by elegance of line, simplified lighting and radically minimal settings” (Rule). Penn had his first retrospective at the MOMA in 1984.

The Academy of Art University library has several images by Penn in the LUNA image database and books about his photography.
